Two former members of Baseball BC will represent Canada at the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Baseball Canada announced today that Canada will take on Italy March 8th to open the 2013 World Baseball Classic at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Arizona.

World Baseball Classic Inc announced today the schedule and pools for the first round of the 16 team event which has Canada in Pool D along with Italy, Mexico and the United States with games taking place at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale and Chase Field in Phoenix.

Canada’s other first round games will take place at Chase Field on March 9th against Mexico and March 10th against the United States.

At the completion of the first round, the top two teams in each pool will advance to the second round.

World Baseball Classic Inc also announced that Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC) of the Minnesota Twins and Brett Lawrie (Langley, BC) of the Toronto Blue Jays have been named to Canada’s provisional roster. The remainder of Canada’s provisional roster will be announced in January.

“The popularity of baseball is growing in Canada, and I’m looking forward to playing in the World Baseball Classic again,” said Morneau. “There’s something special about representing everyone back home, and proving that Canadian baseball is among the world’s best.”
