Canada Cup Final

It was one of the most thrilling Canada Cup finals ever as Team BC fell to Team Ontario 9-8 to win their second straight title in London Ontario.

BC would jump in front with two runs in the second inning.  Morgan Lofstrom (Kelowna) would bring home Mitchell Robinson (Surrey) with a double, then two batters later Lachlan Fontaine (North Vancouver) scored on an RBI sac fly by Justin Clarkson (Nanaimo).

In their next at bats Ontario cut the lead in half thanks to an RBI single from Jake Lumley (Windsor).
BC would get the run back in the bottom of the inning on another sac fly as Robinson drove in Griffin Andreychuk (Nanaimo).

In the top of the fourth Ontario would storm back with four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two out, bases loaded triple from Malik Collymore (Mississauga).  The hit would give Ontario the lead for the first time in the game; 5-3.

BC would get one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth as Shoma Sasaki (Delta) doubled to score Clarkson.

However in the fifth Ontario would send nine men to the plate and score four more runs, all unearned off reliever Clark Grisbrook (North Vancouver). 

BC did not back down scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning as Robinson and Lofstrom scored.  Robinson scoring on a wild pitch while Lofstrom scored on a two out single from Sasaki.

In the sixth BC came within one, scoring two more runs.  Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge) doubled in Andreychuk with his fourth hit of the afternoon; however he was thrown out trying to advance to third.  Later in the inning Fontaine would score Robinson on back to back doubles.

Down 9-8 in the seventh and final frame, BC went 1-2-3 as closer Blake Weston (Oakville) struck out two.

Grisbrook would record the loss, his second of the tournament, while Daniel Procopio (Toronto) picks up the championship win.

BC would outhit Ontario 14-9, but three errors would cost them dearly.

Four BC players would compile multi-hit games, O’Neill had four, Robinson finished with three and both Sasaki and Fontaine each had two.

Team Ontario was led by Collymore who finished 3-4 with five RBIs.

Team Quebec thumped Team Manitoba in the Bronze Medal game 7-2. 

Three of the four teams in Pool A would win medals.

Canada Cup Report - Day 1

Team BC collected two wins on Day One of the 2012 Canada Cup championship tournament in London Ontario. 

In the morning they would blast Team Alberta 10-4, while in the afternoon took down Team Quebec 11-4.

Team BC would take advantage of five Alberta errors in game one, leading to nine unearned runs.
Alberta jumped in front 1-0 in the second inning off BC`s starter Connor Noble (Vancouver).  After that, Noble would settle in and throw five innings, scattering three hits while striking out eight. He records his first win of the tournament.

BC would finally get on the board in the top of the fourth scoring three times.  They would add two more runs in the fifth before exploding for five runs in the top of the sixth.

The BC offense was led by three different players that recorded two hits each.  Both Justin Clarkson (Nanaimo) and Dawson Yates (Kelowna) would finish 2-3 with two RBIs.  Clarkson would double, while Yates doubled and homered.  Mitchell Robinson (Surrey) also picked up two RBIs, finishing 2-4.  Short shop Tyler O`Neill (Maple Ridge) would collect two RBIs on a two-run homerun.

In game two against Team Quebec, BC continued their hot hitting in the first inning scoring three times.  O`Neill would single home a run, while Yates brought in a score on a double.

In the second inning BC continued their onslaught scoring five times and took advantage of more errors.  All five runs were unearned as BC got RBI hits from Yates, Lachlan Fontaine (North Vancouver) and Griffin Andreychuk (Nanaimo).

BC would score another in the third before Quebec finally got on the board in the fifth off starter Colton Wood (Victoria).    The righty would throw 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out three on route to his first win.

Team BC would score two more runs in the sixth and celebrate with an 11-4 win.  The club would blast 15 hits in the win, giving them a Day One total of 23.

Canada Cup Report - Day 2

Day 2 at the 2012 Canada Cup in London Ontario proved to be a difficult one for Team BC, losing their first game of the tournament.

The host Province, Team Ontario mounted a comeback with nine outs to go in the game to beat Team BC 8-3.

Through the first three and a half innings, the starting pitchers had their way with both offenses not allowing a run.  Liam Stroud (Maple Ridge) got his first start of the tournament. 

BC would break through first scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth.  Brandon Feldman (Victoria) would connect on a two-out two run single to bring home Dawson Yates (Kelowna) and Morgan Lofstrom (Kelowna).

The lead was short lived as Team Ontario scored five times in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.  The inning was highlighted by Jake Lumley’s (Windsor) bases clearing double to put Ontario in front for good.

BC would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth on Feldman’s third RBI of the game, but it was too little, too late.

In Pool A, BC now falls to second place with a 2-1 record, while Ontario remains perfect at 3-0.

On Friday, BC will play their second doubleheader of the tournament facing both Quebec (11:00am) and Alberta (5:00pm).  On Wednesday, BC beat both those teams by a combined score of 21-8.

Vancouver Mounties win 2012 Midget AAA Provincials

The Vancouver Mounties won the 2012 Midget AAA championships in Chilliwack last weekend in a tournament characterized by scorching temperatures and several big upsets.  The Mounties were the 7th seed coming into the tournament and prevailed 3-1 over the #8 seed Colverdale Spurs in the semi-final to earn a spot in the finals.
